Art/Culture
One historical event that is agreed upon, but whose impact remains largely unrecognized, is the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804).  What began as a slave uprising led to the defeat of France under Napoleon Bonaparte, and established the first independent black republic in the western hemisphere.  This event has resulted in one of the most unique cultures on the planet.

Embracing and celebrating this rich culture is key to both Vwa Ayiti's mission and success.  We’ve painted historical murals, donated national flags to communities, employed local artists to paint buildings, and help support the “Atis Famn Matenwa,” or Women Artists of Matenwa, in Lagonav.  The island of Lagonav, 45 miles off the coast of Port-au-Prince, is one of Haiti’s poorest places.  Yet this artists’ community continues to thrive with the help of Ra-Ra, a shop in Cape Cod, MA that gives them a means to survive through the sale of their artwork. These artists have become a respected and influential voice in the community and a portion of their earnings now go back to support other local projects.
